Industrial, Product, Environmental Design

Industrial Design is a discipline that found its way to me via Apparel and Product Design.

I love to concept-build, refine mechanics hands-on, and connect the dots between all things tangible and digital.

Zivelo Kiosk Line-up

year

2018-2019

.notes

I led the vision and direction for the two amazing Industrial Designers on my team (David Tipp and Warren Tenney). The vision of 'Modularity' carried over into Verifone's kiosk lineup after acquiring ZIVELO in the latter part of that year.

Levi's Wearable Computing

year

1999-2000

.notes

When I was in the IT Org for Levi's, I had the opportunity to work on a special project. Levi's was an M.I.T. TTT (Things That Think) Consortium member and my manager at that time knew of my technical apparel design background and said "hey, go to the Consortium this year and find us something special to do from what is presented". Fast forward a year later after seeing a proof of concept for a 'Fabric Area Network' (FAN) that M.I.T.'s Media Lab produced (by Rhemi Post), we were already engaged and near proto-complete. We collectively partnered with Motorola, Philips UK, Levis UK, and of course, M.I.T. to produce the following.

K2 Trim + Labeling

year

2009

.notes

The following trim development was a rapid turn, contract design project that found its way to me while I was in the early stages of establishing The Ranch Design Group. A fun project where the devil is truly in the details. I had 2 days to deliver once briefed. It was right up my alley on two fronts: 1) I had owned and operated 2 Snowboarding apparel companies (1990-1997), so I knew the industry, core customer, and the 'biz'. 2) The aesthetic and attributes would have been very close to, if not exactly what I would have produced as direction.

From K2, seasonal direction: 'Modern Utility.'  Hard facets, functional purpose in composition, combination, and form.  Symmetry or balanced asymmetry, masculine and elegantly aggressive.

Zipper pulls where the form promotes a leading 'forward movement' in its functional, static position.  These were inspired by the aesthetic of 'sonar reflecting' properties of aerial stealth technology.

More zipper pulls and a cord lock design inspired by military, modular/functional systems: Picatinny rails, Tritium (glow in the dark) details, wet & gloved environment texturing.

Buttons, Snaps, Badging, and Interior trims.  Designed to provide 'connective tissue' to produce economies of scale.  They will pair with and provide continuity for any combination within the 'parent' system.

2009-2012

.notes

Here is a compilation of some work that my very talented wife and I produced from 2009-2012. We won a few awards and were featured on an episode of House Crashers. We produced everything from water features to environmental features to functional integrations to ceramic tile and housewares.
